School frontage from Christian Street, January 2019.

The school building is part of the rich educational legacy of the city’s far-sighted Victorian forefathers.  Some of these architectural gems continue to this day as schools. Regrettably from a cultural and community perspective, some have already been demolished and are lost forever.  Others have been refurbished and converted for alternative uses,  and others still, such as Sir John Maxwell Primary,  lie empty and boarded up.

Without the benefit of occupation the building is beginning gently to travel the journey from vacant to dereliction as the inevitable process of decay takes place. At the moment (January 2019) this is largely confined to the early stages of vegetation outbreaks, moss and algae growth and patches of saturation of the exterior sandstone. Click here for images.

The property does not hold any formal listed status and features on the Buildings at Risk Register where it is noted as being in a declining condition despite being structurally sound.

THIS UNIQUE COMMUNITY ASSET MUST BE PRESERVED FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
