A new War Memorial was unveiled in Dennistoun, Glasgow on Saturday 29th September 2018. It was designed designed by Owen McGuire, a pupil from a local school – St Denis’ Primary. Work on the polished granite stone began in August with the foundations being laid for the 2.5 tonne structure.
The unveiling followed a a parade from the City Park Business Centre on Alexandra Parade to the main gates of Alexandra Park, the monument’s location.
A pipe band, veteran associations including the Cameronians, the Royal Highland Fusiliers, the Parachute Regimen participated. Cadet troops, Scouts, the Boys Brigade, Girl Guides and local schools also took part.
The organising committee discussed inviting a well known figure to unveil the memorial but decided instead to look for a local hero.
One was found. Dick Gilmour
The Cameronian Friends and Family Association took pride in the fact that the unveiling honour was given to 84 year old Dick Gilmour, a former Cameronian Colour Sergeant who served with the 1st Battalion in Malaya in the early 1950s A resident of Dennistoun for forty years, he still serves the community by working as a respected and well-liked school crossing patrol man.
It was gratifying that so many members of the Association were present for ceremony.
