Gilbert McCreath married Jane (Jean ) Muir on 18 December 1838. He was a farmer at Garpin, Crosshill – a village in Kirkmichael parish. The farm was 110 acres and employed three labourers. William died age 49.
Gilbert and Jean had two children:
William McCreath born 1839 and
Jessie Muir McCreath born 1846. Married Dr James Fergusson.
