It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to attend the the ceremony to mark the official opening, by Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet, of the renovated and expanded Liberation Museum Zeeland on Friday 25 October 2019.
The Battle of the Scheldt forms the focal point of the Bevridingsmuseum Zealand.
This operation provided access to the harbour of Antwerp, thus shortening precarious supply routes from France.
The 6th & 7th Cameronians (as part of the 156th Brigade of the 52nd Lowland Division0 played an important role in this large combined operation led by Canadian Forces.
Given that this year marks also the 75th anniversary of the Battle, it was gratifying to see a healthy number of Cameronian Glengarries both at the Museum’s opening and at the ceremonies at Baarland (where on the Beveland Peninsula) the Cameronians landed and at Sloedam where they battled their way across the causeway and channel to the (then) island of Walcheren.
For those with a passion for WW2 history and the history of the regiment, a visit to the Museum at Nieuwdorp is a must. Put it on your bucket list !!
