James was born in 1861 in Ayr, the son of William McCreath and Margaret Ireland.

His wife was Janet McMurchy, who he married on 26 NOV 1886 in St Rollox, Glasgow. Their seven known children were William (c1887-1962), Margaret Ireland (c1889-1956), Janet McKinnon (c1891-?), Gracie (1893-1983), Jamesina (c1895-?), Malcolm McKinnon (1898-1969) and Robert (1901-1980).
