it is known that the 7th Battalion of the Cameronians was stationed in Cultybraggan POW Camp 21 from late 1943 to spring 1944. The question is sometimes asked if the Battalion was on guard duty at the camp. Although definitive evidence is scant, this seems unlikely.
Construction of the camp, which had a capacity of some 4,500 prisoners, began in May 1941 and was completed by October of that year.
A visit by the International committee of the Red Cross Committee (ICRC) in May 1944 recorded that, at that time, the camp housed under 800 prisoners.
Following the Normandy landings, however, there was a large influx of prisoners – bringing the total number to just under 3000. By this time the Cameronians had been despatched to England.
Further, given the nature of the rigorous training as a Mountain Division and the range of Brigade , Divisional and combined operation exercises, a guard duty role seems unlikely.
Specifically in the Battalion War Diary it is recorded that in April 1944, the Battalion moved from Cultybraggan to occupy requisitioned billets in Comrie and St Fillans – with one company under canvas and one company in Cowden Camp, Comrie.
Maybe someone out there can provide a more definitive answer?
