The SPEY CAFE  was a traditional Italian Cafe that sold confectionary, tobacco and home-made ice cream

It was run by the D’Annunzio family of Grantown. The family came from Villa Latina

The business was run by Lorenzo Volante’s great  aunt Anna (ms Volante) and her husband Tony D’Annunzio.

Tony and Maria had two children: Mario and Dina

Anna’s siblings Giuseppe, Alberto, Serafina and Elvira all worked as assistants in the cafe before opening up their own businesses in  Kingussie and Newtonmore.

Tony and Anna retired in the 1980s.

Their son Mario briefly look over the business before selling it and moving to London where he opened a delicatessen.

Tony died in 1996 and  Anna 10 years later – in 2006.

The Spey Cafe was on The Square at Grantown

The premisses are now occupied by an Indian Restaurant: Sylhet’s Brasserie
