Key features of Austin-Smith:Lord’s design for rethinking the area as a usable, attractive and contemplative space for local residents include: opening up entrances to the park to provide an inviting green space and green link to the street network; introduction of bespoke lighting; replacing overgrown vegetation with new trees and shrubs; and providing a sensitive interpretation of the area’s history through the use of sculptural columns. The design of the columns has been influenced by the site’s use as a burial place in the 17th and 18th centuries as well the legacy of the weaving and dyeing industries which played such an important role in the social history of the area
