Frullani’s Cafe, Gatehouse of Fleet

Giulio Frullani  arrived in Gatehouse of Fleet some time between 1909 (his son Guglielmo’s birth in Italy) and 1914; for in the latter  year he was granted a licence to sell ice-cream at his shop at the corner of the High Street and Digby Street (39-41 High Street). In 1919 he bought the premises.

His gravestone in Girthon Cemetery provides information as to his province of origin:

“In loving memory of Anastasia Lenzini beloved wife of Giulio Frullani born at Cutigliano, Italy 5th August 1889 died at Gatehouse 11th Jany 1940. Also Giulio Frullani, born at Cutigliano, Italy 5th May 1883 died at Gatehouse 3rd August 1952.”

Cutigliano was a comune in the province of Pistoia in Tuscany 50 Km NW of Florence. In 2017 it became a frazione of Abetone Cutigliano.

Another stone records:

“In loving memory of Guglielmo Frullani beloved husband of Ravany Secanti, born in Cutigliano, Italy 30th May 1909, died at Gatehouse 19th May 1953.”

The 1921 Census records the family, residing at 39 High St., as:

Giulio (39) Ice Cream Merchant, Anastasia (32) Wife, William (11) son and Nora daughter  (9)

In 1932, Giulio  presented The Frullani Cup to Gatehouse F.C.

The business thrived before, during and immediately after WW2, as can be seen from the above photo.

It is not known if it was sold on or ceased trading on the deaths of Guido and his son.
