Eliza Jane Shaw (1858-1928) married George Wallace (c.1850-??)

Her various designations in the official records – Jane, Eliza Jane and Elizabeth complicated documenting Eliza Jane’s story

‘Eliza Jane’ Shaw was born on 3 June 1858 at Davidshill, Dalry. At the time of her birth her father, Thomas Strickland Shaw was an Iron Miner.

‘Elizabeth’ Shaw (17) married George Wallace (24), a Coal Miner, on 27 November 1874 at Connelpark, New Cumnock. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Kirk Shaw and Margaret Strickland).

George and ‘Elizabeth’ had two children:

George Wallace (1874 – 1946)

Thomas Samuel Wallace (1876-1948)

Elizabeth continues to be an enigma. She died (age 69) on 7th March 1928 and was living at 293 Duke Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow.  Her death certificate records that she was married twice (i) to George Wallace (Coal Miner) and (ii) to John Wallace (Railway Engine Driver). She outlived both husbands. The informant on the certificate was her brother, Thomas Shaw.

No trace has been found of the death certificate for George Wallace

Nor has been found a marriage and death certificates for John, the second husband.  Was the second husband’s surname given in error?
