The First of Our Haggarts

Until 24 January 2008, the earliest known-to-me founding members of our Haggart branch were John HAGGART (1801- ??) and Catherine CAMPBELL (1800 – 1882).   A search of the OPR Records on that day revealed the names of both sets of their parents – firmly establishing a Tayside connection.

John Haggart was born in Kenmore in 1800.  In the words of the OPR:

“May 9th 1800.  John. Son to John Haggart and Isabel MacKenzie in Lurglomain, was baptised, born 7th.”

John Haggart and Isabel MacKenzie were married in Kenmore.  The relevant OPR entry:

“Dec 17th 1795. John Haggart and Isabel MacKenzie both in this Parish gave up their names for proclamation.”

Catherine Campbell’s antecedents are to be found in the Parish of Killin:

“28th February 1800. John Campbell & Anne Robertson, Murlagan (?), a lawful daughter called Catharine (sic).”

John Haggart and Catherine Campbell were married in Kenmore Parish.

The relevant entry in the Parish Record  reads:

“John Haggart and Catherine Campbell, within this Parish gave their names for proclamation. 17 April 1824”.
