The arrival of Pietrangelo and Serafino around 1897

Pietrangelo Visocchi married Angela Iannetta.

The 1901 Census for Fife records the family of Pietrangelo living at 31 South Street, St Andrews.

At that time, Pietrangelo’s family comprised:

Pietrangelo Visocchi. Age 35.  Head. Married. Confectioner/ Employer. Born Italy

Angela Visocchi. Age 36.  Wife. Married. Born Italy

Loreto Visocchi   Age 10. Son. Scholar. Born Italy

Orazio Visocchi Age 4. Son. Born St Andrews, Fifeshire.

Bernardino Visocchi Age 1. Son. Born St Andrews, Fifeshire.

While Pietrangelo, Angela and Loreto are listed as having been born in Italy and Italian Subjects, Orazio and Bernardino are listed as having been born in ‘Fifeshire, St Andrews. So Pietrangelo must have arrived in Scotland between 1891and 1897.

This is corroborated by a report of the St Andrews Magistrates Court in the Dundee Courier of 20 October 1897. “The applications of Fortunato Visocchi and Pietro Visocchi, ice cream vendors, for public licences for sweets were withdrawn”.

The 1901 Census for Fife records Pietrangelo’s brother, Serafino Fortunato, and his family  also residing at 31 South Street, St Andrew’s:

Fortunato Visocchi. Age 31. Head.  Married Confectioner/ Employer. Born Italy

Maria Visocchi. Age 29. Wife Married. Born Italy

Loreta Visocchi. Age 2. Daughter. Born St Andrews, Fifeshire

The birth place of their daughter Loreta – age 2 – is also listed as ‘Fifeshire, St Andrews’.

Additionally, Giovanni Fallone and Francesco Ferdinandi are respectively listed as a ‘Servant / Assistant Confectioner’ in the households of Pietrangelo and Serafino Fortunato.  The brother’s status as ‘employer’ indicates that they were running their own business.

Further, in ‘The Handbook to St Andrews and Neighbourhood’ published in 1897 there is a listing, under Confectioners for – ‘Visocchi F & P, 31 South Street and 57 Market Street’.
