James McLean was born at Low Drummore on 13 January 1871. He married Jessie Waldie on 6 June 1894 at Rothesay.
James was a Police Constable in Rothesay and his wife, Jessie Waldie, a Tailoress.
James and Jessie had two daughters –
Mary Waldie McLean born 28 March 1895 at 5 Victoria Street, Rothesay
Jane Begg Agnew McLean born 16 March 1899 at 5 Victoria Street, Rothesay.
James died on 19 November 1899, a victim of an on-duty accident. He was 29. A blow to the head from an ‘intoxicated citizen’ resulted in necrosis of the jaw. He was a Sergeant of Police at the time of his death.
His daughter Jean remained unmarried and was a postmistress at Troon. She died on the Isle of Bute in 1992.
Mary married James McKenzie on 27 September 1922 at Rothesay. He was a Works Timekeeper; she a Warehousewoman. They lived at Drumoyne, Glasgow. James and Mary had two sons.
According to Ina Coyle, Mary was severely scalded from a tea-pot perched on a table and succumbed to complications (acute bacterial endocarditis) some 22 weeks later in the Royal Infirmary.
