The merchant John Orr acquired the Stobcross Estate in 1745 and made major improvements to an old existing house. Later, his son Matthew sold a portion of the estate that he had named Finnieston in honour of his old tutor, Reverend John Finnie.

As Glasgow spread westwards, the noble families escaped to more rural parts of the country. When occupied by James McCreath, Stobcross House was ‘passed its prime’. – though the land was in a pole position from which to retail milk to the growing urban population. Stobcross House had been demolished by 1878 and much of the estate became the site of Queen’s Dock.
