According to ‘suekington’ (McConnell/ Bottomley Ancestry Public Tree), David Campbell McCreath is buried at  Kirkmichael Churchyard.  The stone reads:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF AGNES HUNTER

WHO DIED IN CROSSHILL 13th OCT 1884  AGED 80 YEARS

WIDOW OF JOHN ANDREW WHO DIED IN CROSSHILL MARCH 1829

AND OF HER SECOND HUSBAND

DAVID McCREATH WHO DIED IN CROSSHILL 31st DEC 1849 AGED 36 YEARS

David’s birth entry in Ayr Parish: ‘David Campbell McCreath son. Lawful of Robert McCreath Wright at Glengall and Agnes Campbell his spouse born 30 Sept 1807, baptd 2 Octr. by Robert Auld’.

The 1841 Census records a David McCreath, a grocer – aged 34 living at King Street Crosshill:

David McCreath (34) Grocer born  Ayrshire c1807

Agnes McCreath (35) born Kirkmichael c1806

John McCreath (1) born Kirkmichael c1840

This seems to confirm that the age at death is wrongly recorded on the headstone

There is no record of David in the 1851 Census, consistent with the gravestone inscription

Agnes McCreath (46) Grocer born Kirkmichael c1805

John McCreath (11) Scholar born Kirkmichael c1840

Mary McCreath (9) Scholar born Kirkmichael c 1842

Agnes McCreath (7) Scholar born Kirkmichael c1844

Margaret McCreath (4) born Kirkmichael c 1847

Again additional circumstantial confirmation that this is David Campbell McCreath, son of Robert McCreath and Agnes Campbell.

In 1861 there is also a Jeanie McCreath born about 1849. The year of David’s death; and also a visitor, John McLure.

In 1881 the mother Agnes (75) is listed as the Postmistress, Agnes (36), the daughter, as a Grocer and Assistant Postmistress, Jane (Jeanie) (30) as a grocer. There is also listed a niece, Agnes Anderson (2).
