John Thom McCreath, a Grocer to trade, was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow on 27 June 1887.  He emigrated to Canada  in 1905 with his elder brother, Thomas.

The following, (from the Edmonton Journal February 4, 1964; City of Edmonton Archives Chapter 18 – Biographies P), summarises his life in Canada:

“MCCREATH, J.T. Alderman, 1932-1938.  Born in Glasgow and came to Canada in 1905. Lived in Saskatchewan for one year and then moved to Wainwright (Alberta) where he homesteaded with George L. Hudson. Came to Edmonton in 1909 and entered the retail business and opened a store on 95 street and 104 avenue. In the 1920’s he bought the Triangle Jam factory and disposed of this later. In 1919 he married Barbara McCoig. In 1953 Mr. and Mrs. McCreath moved to Toronto where they lived for two years after which they returned to Edmonton. He died February 3, 1964 and is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter”.

In 1921 John Thom McCreath was living in Edmonton City with his wife, Barbara; their son John T McCreath (age 1); his mother Jane, age 68; and his unmarried sister Catherine, age 35,
