Thomas McColm, like his elder brother John, was a farmer. He married Janet Drennan.  As indicated in the introduction,  there was a mistake in the recording of the baptismal details for Thomas – McCallum  erroneously replacing McColm

Thomas is the direct ancestor of Tom Brown of Belfast.  He kindly supplied the documentation of the descendants of Peter McColm and Agnes McCreath. I have simply amplified the research and drafted the accompanying narrative.

Thomas and Janet had a large family; eleven known children.

Margaret (i) 1821-1823

Margaret(ii) 1823-1885

Agnes 1823-1865

Jean 1825-1843

Janet (i) 1828-1835

William 1830-1892

Mary 1832-1915. Married David Murray Lyon

Marion 1836-1852

Janet (ii) 1838-1849

Isabella         c.1838-1916

James 1840-1923

Five of this family died young

The first born, Margaret (i), died in infancy – and, as was customary at the time, the next born – being a girl – was also named Margaret (ii).  Another daughter, Janet(i) died age 7. Again a later child was also named Janet (ii). The second Janet, like her namesake, did not survive childhood. In 1843, the couple’s daughter, Jean, also passed away – aged only 18.

Sadly also, in 1841 Thomas died  leaving Janet to raise the family single-handed. To support the family, for a time, she ran  a grocer’s shop in Ayr town.
