In World War II Fort Ellewoutsdijk fell into German hands and became part of Stützpunkt Große Kurfürst, a heavily fortified strategic position.
A machine gun bunker was built on the western side of the fortification.
Today a number of “Tobruks” can still be seen at the fort. One of them has an upper cover and a spyhole in the side. A Tobruk is a type of small concrete bunker, with a machine gun position, which was built by the Germans in late 1944 along the so-called Atlantic Wall.
