Charlie’s Fish Bar on Grant Street in the Merkinch area of Inverness was established by Charles Pieraccini in 1944.

Charlie emigrated from the Tuscan town of Barga with his brothers. He opened the fish and chip shop at 29 Grant Street after returning from internment on the Isle of Man during the war.

He opened a second business in 1952: Charlie’s Cafe on Margaret Street.

Charlie’s son St Clare later took over the fish bar, while his other son Charlie Jr. took over the cafe.

Charlie died in 1990.

Charlie’s grandson Martin took on the running of both premises after the retirement of his father Clair and Uncle Charlie Jr.

Clair died in 2012.

After being run by three generations of the Pieraccini family for 71 years, Charlie’s Fish Bar came to an end in September 2015.

The business currently trades as McLeod’s Fish and Chips, Dave McLeod and his wife Annmarie took over the premises in October 2016.

In 2019, McLeod’s lifted the title of’ Best Fish and Chips’ at Scotland’s Business Awards.
