A creamery was first established on the site of an old distillery in 1910 by United Creameries and for many years a range of products (cheese, condensed milk, butter and industrial casein) were made.

In 1974 Unigate sold the creamery to a jointly owned family business, thus establishing The Campbeltown Creamery Ltd. The new owners converted the operation to cheddar cheese production. The ‘milk field’ supplying the creamery includes the Mull of Kintyre peninsula south of Tarbert and the Island of Gigha – supplemented by milk purchased from the North of Scotland MMB.

In 1990 Campbeltown Creamery Ltd was acquired by First Milk. Its product range included of own-label cheddar, Mull of Kintyre and Scottish Pride cheddar and Scottish Pride butter.

Although Scottish Pride went into receivership in 1997 the creamery continued trading until 2017 when First Milk put the creamery up for sale.

Some 30 Kintyre-based farmers launched an online crowdfunding campaign to help them buy the business when it became clear that a sale to third party was unlikely. The campaign exceeded its target figure but it proved insufficient to move their plans forward.

In 2020 the site was sold to McFadyen’s Transport – one of the largest employers in Kintyre with over 100 people working in its construction and transport business
