This popular cafe was located at the junction of Charlotte Street and Harbour Street, It is believed to have been started by Fedele Bonugli. (As ever, corroboratory information or corrections are welcomed!)
The picture was posted on Facebook. Morag Wilson identified her grandfather, Giuseppe (Peppy) standing in the doorway with his brothers. Three of the brothers (Fedele, Peppy and Pietro) moved to Northern Ireland, later returning to Tuscany.
There is an interesting historical reference to the Bonugli family on the First World War Memorial plaque in the Town Kirk in Ivy Place, London Road. The memorial reads:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS CHURCH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR./ (Names)/ WHO WERE FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH. ALSO IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO SERVED/ (Names)/
Of the total of 40 names on the memorial, 7 are listed as having given their lives and 33 as having served and returned. Two of the latter were Giuseppe and Nicholas Bonugli. (Click for link)
In 1917, Clementina Bonugli married by declaration, Giuseppe Adami, who in due course ran the business.
Giuseppe Adami’s mother, Elisabetta, was a Bechelli. Could she be related to the Bechelli family from the Allan Water Cafe, Bridge of Allan?
