Benedetto Pignatelli, and his wife Carmela came to Scotland from Cassino in the early years of the 20th century, and in 1924 opened the café in Kilmacolm.  Formally the Cross Café, it was known to all as ‘Ben’s café’. Click here for Old Postcard of the Cross, Kilmacolm.

Ben’s daughter, Mafalda, married Giovanni Jannetta in 1951. She and Giovanni took over the business. (The couple anglicised their names to Mabel and Johnny)

The cafe celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2014. On Mabel’s retiral, two of Ben’s grand-daughters, Alda and Johanna took over the business.
