It would seem likely that the Divito family arrived in Crossgates from Casalattico, Frosinone Province some time after 1901.

The family of Giuseppe and Rosa Devito (ms Borzza) is listed in the 1911 Census as being resident at 200 Main Street, Crossgates. Born in Italy, Giuseppe was  then an Ice Cream Vendor; later a Confectioner.

At the time, Giuseppe and Rosa had 5 children, all born in Italy. The youngest son, Giuseppe, was born two years earlier  – which narrows  the family’s arrival as being between 1909 and 1911.

Other siblings were born in Fife including a daughter, Lucia, and a son, Alberto.

Alberto was conscripted into the British Army during World War 2.  He served with the 8th Battalion Royal Scots. He married Colomba Ciaraldi in 1940. Sadly Albert was killed in June 1941. The previous year his father, Giuseppe (then 66) was interred and put aboard the ‘Arandora Star’. He was one of the 486 Italians to lose their lives when the ship was torpedoed off Ireland.

In the Censimento of 1933, Angelo Divito is listed as a Confectioner at Main Street, Crossgates. To this day Divito’s remains a thriving business. It has not yet been established if it remains family owned.
