Jean Kirkwood McCreath

Jean Campbell McCreath was born in 1889. The second daughter of David McCreath and Jane Kirkwood Campbell.

Ernest Hamilton Beadnell

Ernest Hamilton Beadnell was born on 22 April 1884 at Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India.

In 1901, age 16, he was a pupil at the United Services College in Westward Ho, Devon.  The United Services College was a private boys’ boarding school for the sons of military officers.  It was founded to prepare pupils for military service, many of them going on to Sandhurst and Dartmouth.  It is assumed that his father was an officer in the Indian Army

Jean and Ernest married on 10 June 1920 at Bloomsbury St George. London.  Ernest became a Tea Planter.

Ernest and Jean had two children:

  • Heather Jean Beadnell born 12 October 1921 in Maymyo, Burma.  Heather married John Girdlestone Gill born 27 March 1916 in India. Died 20 January 1974, Chichester, Sussex. One son, Adrian Gill, born 1948
  • Briony A. Crichton Beadnell born 1927. No biographical details.

On 11 October 1929, the family is listed on the Bibby Line’s SS Gloucestershire having embarked at Liverpool for Rangoon via Marseilles, Port Said, Port Sudan and Colombo

The Beadnells disembarked at Colombo, their intended destination Mysore.

On 5 January 1935 Ernest and Jean arrived at Liverpool from Rangoon aboard the SS Bhamo.  Earnest (50) is listed as retired. Jane a housewife, aged 45.

Their contact address  in Scotland was given as 24 Ballantine Drive, Ayr. (Jean’s father’s abode).

Ernest Hamilton Beadnell died on 19 December 1948 at Selborne Nursing Home, Ootacamund, South India.  Jean Campbell McCreath died on 20 February 1968 at The Infirmary, Berwick-upon-Tweed
