The business in 31 South Street, St Andrews was established by the brothers Pietrangelo and Serafino Visocchi. Their partnership ended when Pietrangelo left to establish an enterprise in Leven. The St Andrews shop remained initially in Serafino’s hands but was later sold to Benedetto Jannetta; Serafino opening a cafe in Blairgowrie.

In 1908, Benedetto (Bennett) founded Jannettas at 31 South Street – as a soda parlour and tobacconist.

Bennet’s son, Charlie,  as well as maintaining the ice-cream side of the business, expanded into fish and chips by opening a restaurant next door.  Serafino’s son, Fortunato and Charlie were close friends; Fortunato was the bestman at Charlie’s wedding.

Charlie’s daughter, Fiona, married Davide De Angelis. They expanded the range of ice-cream flavours dramatically and refurbished the shop into a modern Italian Gelateria.

Today the business is run by Fiona and Davide’s daughter, Nicola and her husband, Owen Hazel. (Nicola is Bennet Jannetta’s great-grand-daughter). Innovations include removing the wall between the cafe and ice cream portion of the shop to create a 1950’s diner atmosphere.

In 2014, Jannettas won the Golden Cone Award.
