Giuseppe Martone came to Scotland from Tuscany around 1900.

He began by selling hand-churned ice cream from a cart he pushed around the streets of Saltcoats.

Today the successor business in Irvine is run by his great-grandson, Marco Edge and his partner, Cheryl. It is named Vanilla Joe’s as a tribute to his great-grandfather, whose secret family recipe had been handed down through the  years.

Vanilla Joe’s only opened its doors in 2015. Earlier, since leaving school at 15, Marco had been working in the family’s fish and chip shops in Ayrshire.

In 2015 Vanilla Joe’s won the Golden Cone Award.
