Visocchi’s in Broughty Ferry has been run by the Caira family since 1954, when the business was taken over from his Visocchi cousins by Marco Caira. Marco had immigrated to Scotland with his wife

The cafe started by selling sweets, coffee and tobacco.

In the late 70s, things changed with the opening of supermarkets and petrol stations, so the concept of the business was changed by his son Marco (and his wife Antonietta) to become an ice cream shop with a more Italian, gelateria feel. It also popularised different varieties of fresh coffee, including cappuccino which was little known in the 1980s.

Marco and Antonietta’s sons, Marco and Roberto, have learned the craft from their parents and taken it a step further. They won the Golden Cone Award in 2013.

Sticking to their ethos of evolution, Visocchi’s has embraced social media as a way of communicating with its customers.

Marco Snr. believes that the ability to change and look ahead has been a key to Visocchi’s success. A team of eight members of staff volunteer their time to help with the Facebook and Twitter pages, and their work has resulted in an Italian Award for Best In-House Marketing.
