William Bain Shaw and Jane Mason married at Auchinleck Village on 31 December 1880 (After Banns according to the Forms of the Church of Scotland. Both were 19. Both of their families lived at Beechwood Square, Auchinleck. At the time of his marriage William was a Collier – like his father and father-in-law.

At the birth of their first child, Jane, Jane (the mother) was still living at Beechwood Square, Auchinleck, while William, having joined the Police Force, was domiciled in Glasgow. In 1883, the year of my grand-mother’s birth, William was based at Stewarton.  By 1884 William was a County Constable based at Prestwick.. By 1889 the family had moved to Glasgow, initially to South Wellington Street; then by 1891 to 54 Surrey Street. In 1896 the family was at 56 Surrey Street.  William was still a constable with the police.

By the time of the birth of their son, William, the family still at 56 Surrey Street, William was a Drapery Traveller.  When their last child, Thomas Kirk, was born in 1904, William was a House Furnisher’s Agent and the family had moved to 278 Mathieson Street
