James Shaw was born in Newtonards, County Down in 1856 and died in Roslyn, Kittitas, Washington in 1924 (age 68).  Like his father he was a miner. He married Ellen McManus on  28 November 1873 at New Cumnock, Ayrshire and had a large family – 12 children, 3 of whom died in infancy.

Using this information from Peter Vanderlee, chimoblue007 and SANDRAMORETTA as a starting point for research on ‘ScotlandsPeople’, it was possible to confirm  individual birth dates, and add the children’s birth locations.
