Peter Haggart married Elizabeth Sutherland in Glasgow in 1892. His occupation is given as ‘Grey Cloth Warehouseman’. On the birth certificates of two of his children, he is later recorded  as a ‘Bleachfield Worker’  at Keirfield . His death certificate states blandly ‘Textile Worker’.  The family lived originally at Cornton Brickworks before moving to the Old Mill and then to 24 Avenue Park.

The family moved to 2 Cawder Gardens, which was his usual residence until his death in 1962. He was predeceased by Elizabeth.

The couple were known  to my mother as ‘Pate’  and ‘Lizzie’.

Keirfield was established in 1851 when John Pullar came to Keirfield from Perth, where the family business had been founded in 1824. (Coincidentally the year of the marriage of John Haggart and Catherine Campbell in Kenmore). The works prospered and by the early 1900s the firm had agents throughout the world. The initials R.P.&S. (Messrs Robert Pullar and Sons) were internationally known as the hallmark of perfection in cotton cloth. Peter’s jobs given a hint as to one of the processes involved in making this high quality product – whitening the cloth.

As a consequence of the depression of the 1930s there were many dismissals at the Keirfields works.  It is not known if Peter, or any other members of the family, fell foul of this economic disaster.

In 1946, the Keirfield works were purchased by Kork-n-Seal Ltd., as the name implies the factory made metallic closures for a wide variety of glass containers.
