Margaret Laidlaw McCreath ( 24) married William Milroy (24), an Iron Turner at Cathcart on 2 November 1894.

They had 5 children:

William Milroy born 16 March 1895, Cathcart.

Margaret Laidlaw Milroy born 14 December 1896, Cathcart.

Thomas McCreath Milroy born 5 December 1898, Cathcart

John Milroy born 20 February 1902, Cherryha’, Cathcart

Alice Annie Milroy born 16 June 1908, Cathcart

In 1911 the family was resident at 161 Holmlea Road, Cathcart. William the father was plying his trade as an Iron Turner at a Pump Manufacturers. William, the eldest son, was a Clerk in a Wholesale Grocers.  His siblings, with the exception of Alice, were at school.

William Milroy Senior’s place of employment would undoubtedly have been the pump manufacturer G & J Weir established at Cathcart in 1871.

During the First World War the business manufactured munitions and the Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2, a biplane which saw extensive service during the last three years of the conflict.

Throughout the 1950s the company’s steam pumps were common on steamships built worldwide.

In 2007 Weir Pumps was sold to Clyde Blowers, owned by Jim McColl, who changed the name of the business to Clyde Pumps.  A year later, a merger with Union Pumps saw the name changed to Clyde Union Pumps.  In 2011 Clyde Union pumps was sold to the American group SPX Corporation.  Today ClydeUnion employs almost 2,000 staff around the world and manufacturers in eight locations in seven countries.
