William McCreath (age 20) married Margaret Ireland (23) at Ayr on 5 February 1858. He was then a ‘Horsebreaker’.

At the time of his death he was a Coachman. He died, aged 40 on 6 November 1876 at 264 Parliamentary Road, Glasgow.

The death certificate give his parents as James McCreath, Shoemaker Master and Isabelle Dinning (sic).  The name is rendered in various ways in the Parish and Census Records.

Curiously, on the death certificate, his wife’s name is given as Margaret Arnot (sic). There is no record of a Margaret Arnot, so this may simply be a clerical error. He died of Phthisis Pulmonalis.

In 1861 the couple were resident at 7 Old Bridge Street, Ayr, and had two children – William (2) and James (1 Mo). By 1871, they had moved to Glasgow, with his occupation given as Horse Keeper.  By then  a third child, Robert – age 7 – is recorded. Prior to 1871 a fourth child, Margaret McCreath, had died in infancy.

The children of William McCreath and Margaret Ireland:

James McCreath (1861-1929). Married Janet McMurchy
